[OT] Is this a con?

J

John Corliss

Sorry, this is totally off-topic (where would this sort of thing be
ON-topic, anyone know?) A friend of mine received the following email
and is thinking of signing up to it. Personally I wouldn't touch it
with a barge pole. (translation: I believe it to be completely
untrustworthy). Anybody know anything about it?

The email says:
*CLIPPED*

Please don't repost spam to this group for any reason. There actually
*are* appropriate newsgroups for discussing this kind of thing. By
posting that spam with the affiliate links, you did the spammer a big
favor, and God knows they don't need any.

Here are some more appropriate group for asking your question:

The email says:

Together with John Alderdice, I recently became associated with a
company that is launching a revolutionary new worldwide Internet
service in October. As part of their prelaunch promotion I am
authorised to sign up friends and colleagues before that date so they
can receive the service totally FREE for life.

How about that for a too good to be true statement?

But it is true.

The service will give you speeds of 2mbs - four times faster than
normal broadband and forty times faster than normal internet dial-up
access. This applies to both PC and Mac computers.

It takes just one minute to download the software which will be
available from 1st October.

You can stay with you existing ISP and keep your same email address,
but there will be NO more monthly Internet fees or call charges. All
your Internet activity will be free!

They are so confident of this revolutionary system they are also
giving the following guarantees:-

You will never receive a virus or worm in your email again. If you do
they will pay you £500 compensation!
You will never receive spam again. If you do they will pay you £100
compensation.
If you wish they will block every porn site. If they fail they will
pay you £200 compensation!

I can only seriously recommend you follow the link below to my
website, read all about the system and sign up as a customer - for a
free-for-life account only do it today as there is a limit to the
number of free accounts on offer!

What have you got to lose?

To sign up for your free lifetime account go to:

Well I get a error that the page can not be viewed?
So how much do they pay me for that?

Anyway if it sounds to good to be true....

They claim:-

It pays a very good commission per connection - £27 GBP.
It pays an override per connection by referrals - £1.78 GBP

Which is probably why were seeing this crap being spammed all
over usenet, web forums and "auctioned" on ebay.

Odd that a service offered for "free" has got so much money to give away....
(or so they claim)

Then amongst their other unbelievable claims there's hundreds of pounds
up for grabs if you get a spam, virus, etc, etc, or if you don't get a
100% reliable 2Mb connection on Dial-up.

If anyone is mug enough to sign up please don't risk rewarding spammers
by using the posted affiliate website or links.

No more Spam please!

Yes, sorry about that. I was unsure about posting the details, but I
could not see how to ask the question without giving the address.

Thank you for the newsgroup names, they will be very useful.

Have you seen this one before? How can you tell its a con?

J

John Corliss

MAMEngineer whined:
You're a dick, Corliss.

Why, because I hate spammers? Or because I pointed a@b to better
groups in which to get an answer?

F*ck off, bonehead.

J

John Corliss

I'd check the second one out just based on the name alone! 80)>

Haven't seen it before because I get no spam at all since changing my
user ID and taking down my website. There is some mention of BT, so
I'd go to their homepage and see if they mention it:

http://www.btconnect.com/

I notice that all of the links say one thing when you pass the mouse
over them, but when you actually click on them they redirect. In fact,
all it looks like to me is a spammer's email gathering scheme.

MAMEngineer whine and sniveled:
You're a dick, Corliss.

Care to elaborate on why you think that? Or better yet, why I should
give a shit *what* you think?

Each 404 pays £3500 and two weeks paid luxury holiday with the company
chairman's very attractive 20 year old twin nymphomaniac daughters.

I should know better after all these years but I gave my email address in a
much simpler scam like that. Looked at, didn't click any of them, and
deleted it. However up until then, I hadn't gotten one spam since changing
to rr and now they are coming. So just that clicking of the web page was
enough for them. Be careful out there.

I firmly believe it is, as you said, nothing but a address collector.

I think you should invest all your savings in it. Take out an equity
loan on you house if you have one and invest that too.

I don't know which browser you're using (IE??) but by default, most
are set to use your email address as an "anonymous FTP password". In
Mozilla at least, you can change the email address which is used to
either a fake one or a spamdump.

Apparently, there was a problem with OE that's explained at these pages:

http://www.glenns.org/spam/ftpgrab.html
http://www.infoworld.com/cgi-bin/displayNew.pl?/livingst/980601bl.htm

Maybe somebody else can jump in here and provide a better explanation.

I see your kill filter is still effective!

Elaboration: You are a dick. This newsgroup is not yours, you do not own
it, you do not moderate it. If you feel someone is doing wrong, be polite.
Polite wins friends. Being a dick gets you a tossed in a condom.

You should give a shit what I think. You should realize that half of the
people who post here think you're a dick, and do something about it. Read
the posts about you on google. You're a dick.

Actually, I clean it out occasionally to see which filters are still
needed. Looks like I've found one.
Elaboration: You are a dick.

Well, that's certainly mature. Namecalling like that is guaranteed to
make me respond in a positive manner and to lead to constructive
conversation.
This newsgroup is not yours, you do not own
it, you do not moderate it.

I'm very aware of this. And by the way, it's not yours either. Nor do
you own or moderate it yourself. I will post what and how I like.
If you feel someone is doing wrong, be polite.

Oh, polite like *you* I suppose you mean.
Polite wins friends. Being a dick gets you a tossed in a condom.

More language guaranteed to lead to constructive conversation.

Hmmm. Let's analyze my reply:
Please don't repost spam to this group for any reason. There actually *are* appropriate newsgroups for discussing this kind of thing. By posting that spam with the affiliate links, you did the spammer a big favor, and God knows they don't need any.

"Please" was used and I pointed out that there are appropriate
newsgroups for such messages. Nothing rude there that I see.
Here are some more appropriate group for asking your question:

news:alt.stop.spamming

I listed some examples. Again, nothing rude there.

I closed with a courteous signature file. Nothing rude there either.

Looks like your accusations don't hold water.
You should give a shit what I think.

When you act like a 12 year old troll, I certainly don't.
You should realize that half of the
people who post here think you're a dick, and do something about it.

Since when are *you* "half of the people" here?
Read the posts about you on google. You're a dick.

Spoken bravely from behind your keyboard like all cowardly trolls. Oh
well, back into the bozo bin you go.

Thanks. I had read somewhere that MS had taken care of that problem.
This was how then.
