OT: Installation of hardrive

Satoshi

My XP computer has two HDs. Since D-drive is 10 GB, I am going to replace
with a new 40GB HD.
Because of my hazy memory, I would like to know whether the newly installed
40GB HD needs formatting with WinXP or not. When I tried yesterday, Device
Manager indicated the installation of the 40GB harddrive but my computer did
not show the letter "D" for D-drive. So I am wondering whether D-drive
would show when formatted. Satoshi

Let me know how to format the HD. I thought that WinXP Pro disc is used for
only the main C drive.

Nawww. You can use it to format all attached harddrives.

But an easier way is goto control panel/adminstrative tools/computer
management/disk management and you can partition/format in XP.

Thanks. In another words, partition/format can be done without inserting
WinXP Pro CD into CD ROM drive. Is that correct? Please advise me.

One of the things I had to unlearn when I switched to XP was formatting HDs.
With previous Windows OSes I had to fdisk to create partitions, format them,
and then install the OS.

With the XP CD and an unformatted HD, I can create just one partition large
enough to install the OS. Never make this too small, I wouldn't advise
anything under 10 GB. Once XP is installed, use disk management to create
partitions and format the remaining space on your HD. In fact, the last time
I did this I formatted three partitions simultaneously!

Thanks everybody who responded to my question. I successfully installed
and formatted the new 40GB drive.
I tested and no problem. But here is a hitch.
When booted, an error was shown on screen:

Boot from ATAPI CDROM: Failure.

That never happened before. This error was shown after the installation of
the new HD.
Could someone tell me how to troubleshoot this problem? Thanks. Satoshi
