[ot] hijack and adware will not get rid of it

T

Tom Gahagan

Hi all......

I've got a web search bar that my teens allowed to be added to my computer.
It shows up on startup and you can exit out of it but I want it gone.

It does not show up in change or remove programs and hijack and adware have
not been able to get rid of it. Any suggestions on how it can get it gone.
It is on a Win 2000 pro machine.

Thanks....

Is it listed in Program Startup folder?

tell me about it...I just spent a couple of hours getting rid of mysearchbar crap. what really ticks me off is these scumware programs seem to target sites my kids enjoy so my wife's machine ends up with a zillion goofy things running.

best thing to do is a Google search for the name of the offending program + spyware - then read up on it and how to get rid of them.

one thing about Ad-aware...if you are using Custom config and a new program (like a BHO or anything else for that matter) gets added Adaware doesn't automatically add it to your scan list.

check msconfig for anything that is running that looks weird...verify it by doing a Google on the name of file if you don't think it's legit. Uncheck what you suspect.. also end running task on it. Then run Adaware.

No Thomas, it is not, unfortunately as that would have given me some type of
location or name to search for.

Thanks

Hi Crash.....

That sounds like WORK! (for those of us in the group that are old enough
to remember Maynard G Greebs on the old Doobie Gillis Show!) :)

Thanks for the direction, I will give it a whirl.

Also...it never hoits to actually look through Program files, as Adaware, Spybot S&D sometimes will miss things. If I don't recognize something I do a google search + spyware and see what it might be. You'd be surprised what you may find.

Crash... and for anyone lurking.....

I finally found the file in: c:\winnt\wdskctl.exe after looking in Computer
manager and looking in the running modules and startup folders.....

It's name is: IE Plugin or IE Plugin Desktop Toolbar

AND......

When I left it open (running) Hijack this was able to find it and remove it.

Problem solved!!!!

Good deal!

That's how I usually spend my saturday mornings cleaning junk off the kids/wife's machines!

Then answering stoopid questions; Who put that there? I didn't download anything...yah.
