[OT] : Google's 20 Year Usenet Timeline

M

Mario Alvares

"Google has fully integrated the past 20 years of Usenet archives into
Google Groups, which now offers access to more than 800 million messages
dating back to 1981. This is by far the most complete collection of
Usenet articles ever assembled and a fascinating first-hand historical
account.

We compiled some especially memorable articles and threads in the
timeline below. For example, read Tim Berners-Lee's announcement of what
became the World Wide Web or Linus Torvalds' post about his "pet project".

They should have added

2004 Google introduces millions of (ignorant) internet users to usenet
through their convenient web interface and begins to kill off the resource
they are archiving.

And of course when you first started using a computer, you were immediately
an expert?

Nothing to do with expertise.

Usenet is a resource because people read it and contribute when they are
able.

The vast majority of those accessing usenet via google do not read it. They
search it and occasionally (and dumbly) contribute to a thread which
finished 2 years ago. Or they post their question which often takes the
form:-

Hi,
Solve my problem for me
Thnx

then only read any thread which develops. A large proportion of google
users have never made a usenet post outside a thread which they started
with a question.

Google has mostly introduced millions of information leeches to usenet and
those that currently read usenet and provide information will soon get
pissed off feeding them.

Er, Google Groups doesn't let you reply to old posts...

And someone like yourself with no life has the justification to complain
because....?
