Cox high speed is switching to Gigagnews, with a range of fees. Are there
still free providers?

(free, text only, no binaries, no registration required, ready to use immediately,
limited to 25 text posts per day which is plenty.)

You can connect to E-S without authentication, but only a small
list of newsgroups will appear if you do that. If your news
client has a tick box to request or force authentication,
then your news reader will be able to pass a username and
password. Once you've registered with E-S server, and
received your new account, you can enter that username and
password, and then the newsgroup list should include
thousands of groups. If for any reason, authentication
is failing, then the newsgroup list will contain just a handful
of items.

The free servers also enforce other restrictions, but that
is all part of the fun of using them. There are more of
these free servers, each with their own arcane features.

Yes. Lots. Some good, some bad, some awful.

This link might help in your search:

Also, consider the "low fee" providers that charge $10 or so a year. I
found one that looked really good, but can't find the link right now.

Many people kill filed posts from the MS servers, HoopleHead.

Thanks, Stefan, going there now.

| Short answer is Yes. Google is your friend.

Thanks, Paul. Much better than through long Googling (which I had done).

Thanks, Bruce. Much good help here, better than googling.

I'm in the same boat, and signed up with Eternal-September a week ago. I'm
running it in parallel with Cox's server, using different newsreaders
(Thunderbird for E-S and NewsXpress for Cox) so they can be run
simultaneously. So far I don't perceive any problems with the new service,
and figure it can't be any worse than Cox's often-slow connection to Usenet.

Aer, I saw, on eternal sept, the letters you used above: E-S. Maybe the're
explained at eternal, if so, don't find it. Is E-S one of the functions of
eternal? I have the basic Eternal running now. Am looking for FireFox, not
in the list of groups, nor is Thunderbird.

Once in a blue moon, Daave, binaries too. Know any?

I simply used E-S to denote "Eternal-September" - hope there wasn't some other
meaning not known to me.

I've only added a few newsgroups so far. But your question doesn't click with
me - Firefox is a browser, Thunderbird is a newsgroup reader and email client,
and I don't understand what either has to do with the list of newsgroups that
a given Usenet provider might choose to carry. Forgive me if I've missed
something obvious!

"Teranews free" but it's more reliable at certain time of day (evenings and
nights) in eastern north-america; my experience anyway.

But it's not completely free, there is a one time fee of about four bucks.

Not really. You would need to Google for open servers; I see some have
already posted links. But for binaries, you would more than likely need
to pay for that service. Eternal September is great for text only,
though.

Firefox and Thunderbird are on Mozilla.org server: news.mozilla.org
They are subgroups listed under: Mozilla.support.

Art, a second after clicking send on my post, I saw the obvious E-S
meaning. Dumb mistake. On cox, there was, maybe is still for a price, a
newsgroup for FireFox and for Thunderbird - very low traffic, so not much of
a loss.
Thanks for your inputs.
