[OT] Experiences using OOo Base 2.0?

Have you used OOo Base?

I'm looking for any feedback from people who're using OOo 2.0.x Base. We
were thinking about using it and have stopped for now. I've written up
a ditty on our limited experience w/it and am wondering if others have
had the same issues.

John H wrote in "Somewhat OT - ACT Goldmine replacements" about rolling
your own ACT-like app using, among others, openoffice's Base. I'd been
playing with Base during the pre-release and, recently attempted a trial
run in production.

Background:
My business is buying IC's of all kinds and selling them into what's
known as the MRO market. Lots of specs. Lots of part numbers. Some
mapped to other part numbers through obsolescence. And then...lots of
potential suppliers, all with different terms...you get the idea.

Setting up Table & Reports:
I set up a table such that each record had w/15 fields defined using the
wizard. Similarly, I used the wizard to set up 3 different reports
based on the table (one for purchasor, one for supplier and one for
customer). I added a couple of items to the table, ran the reports...So
far so good. The data-entry guy took it on w/instructions to add 50
active items. Wizards were easy to use. Help doc was useful(!)

Data Entry - Problem:
At record 20, I'm called over. The table is showing record #17 as
completely blank. No data was lost, the record was just "skipped over."
Not sure how it happened...entry guy said he was tabbing all the way
through, no special characters, etc.

I try to "edit" the phantom record. Base crashes.

I try to delete the phantom record. Base crashes.

Both times, OOo regroups well. I relaunch the app, it says it can
recover the following tables. I say "please do," and it does so.
Again, no data lost. Phantom record is now gone. We finish up the data
input together, everything's fine.

Modifying Reports - Problem:
The reports Wizard was very easy to deal with. Pretty templates, etc.
After creating a report template, I chose to edit it (fixing certain
column widths, adding time-stamps & co. logo). On save/exit, Base
crashed. Base, y.a. recovered gracefully - no loss of data. Since
then, I've gone through the same motions w/o a problem.

Although everything seems fine at this point, we've gone back to
spreadsheets. Although OOo's recovery module works like a charm, the
crashes spike my blood pressure.

I haven't really used the Base, but if it's helpful or at least
informative, I've been experiencing some anomalities using Writer.

1) Figures and tables, using .doc format.
There seems to be some inconsistencies how Writer handles .doc
conversions. I really haven't had the chance to fully exploit .odt, 'cos
mostly I do collaborative work and LUT default WP is of course Word.

There's been one instance when I've edited a document at that time about
25 pages long at the time, with multiple tables and .png images. I saved
the doc as .doc and sent it to my colleague and all the figs were gone.
I couldn't get them to show nor could he.

Second inconsistency is the font color of tables. Word seems to
sometimes interpret table font color white when printing, although the
display font is default color. This has been verified with mixture of
OO.o 2.0.x, Word 2003 on WXP SP2 with HP LasetJet network printer.

2) Page numbering in Table of Contents.
Third anomality happened, when I was again working on a document, in
collaboration with a Word-user. This document has ToC on the third page,
and the page number 1 is the fourth page from the start. All went peachy
until one time I updated the ToC and the page numbers bounced up by
three (1. becoming number 3 etc.). Not the actual page numbers but just
the ToC decided to start numbering of it's own.

I tried to fix this by removing ToC and creating a new one, with the
same results. Then I figured it has to be a mix-up with the page styles
and page breaks and I systematically deleted page break and did the
formatting with 8 days a week guide
<http://www.8daysaweek.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=34> No improvement,
until I manually corrected page numbering.

There are my findings, and although they're OT in an OT thread, I
decided to report. After all, it's the little annoyances that drive you
off the cliff :)

Yes I've used Base a bit. I've had glitch problems both in Base, Calc
and Writer. I just did an update last night and these disappeared.
Staying on top of the latest build seems to sold several problems at
once, esp since you don't have to wait a month for an update like those
who use MS.

Hey Kalle;

Can't comment on the other issues but the one above, ISTR, has to do
with >embedding< images as opposed to >linking<. And linking appears to
be default. Give it a check.

thanks for the write-up
