You don't have to switch off email scanning. I had the same problem, and
found that the "certification message" that is added is what is being
detected as an attachment. You can turn off mail certification but leave
email scanning on, and you will not get the attachment indicator.

Email scanning should be turned off on all computers under all
circumstances. It is basically all hype and no substance.

See MVP Tom Koch's article on Outlook Express file corruption at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx
especially the section "Viral Irony: The Most Common Cause of
Corruption".

Symantec used to have some technical documents on their web site that
discussed the futility of email scanning but marketing and or p.r.
concerns prevailed and the articles have disappeared.

So I would have been better off with the virus's (most inadvertently sent by
people I knew who didn't know they were infected) rather than having them
detected and removed by the email scanner of my anti-virus? I'll stick with
the scan-

Thanks

Your scanner should act whenever you open an attachment (and you are
careful, aren't you, in choosing which attachments you open;-).

What Ron was trying to point out was probably that AV integration with
e-mail clients creates more problems than it solves. If you get an infected
e-mail the real time scanner should pick that up anyways, if you should try
to run any nasty attachments.

AVG will prevent you from opening or saving the attachment if it contains a
virus that AVG knows about. Email scanning slows down sending and receiving
email and can cause the operation to fail.

I agree, the e-mail scan is a nice thing to have.
on a properly configured system there are no MAJOR problems.
only thing I notice is having to exit and run again OE to compact all folder.
a minor inconvenience for peace of mind.

I don't agree with such a blanket condemnation. I run eTrust email
scan, together with Forte Agent as my main email, but also with
Thunderbird which I am trying out for the benefit of others. And when I
get mail from the address I use, munged, in my handle here, or in
another account that is there mostly as a spam trap, I find it comes up
with a neat, clear display of viruses detected and cleaned/removed - and
they have indeed done so. Even in zip attachments. Not that this means
you should not bother with a separate scan on saving attachments, but it
is certainly providing a good initial defence
