organizing windows mail contacts

I took the time to organize my contacts into folders.......then I went to
send an email and clicked on "select recepients" and the whole dang list of
contacts comes up that you have to scroll thru.......instead of showing the
folders that I just organized........what kind of crap is this? I hate this
thing....windows mail really sucks........it is set up with no regard to the
home user........everything about Vista seems to be geared towards
"business"........the "home" computer user has just been totally
forgotten........is there anyway to get this darn list organized better?

Try right clicking the contacts window and you can choose Group by or Stack
by or whatever.

See if that helps.

what you said makes sense, but for the average ordinary person like myself,
some of your wording made no sense

the folder "contacts" is organized into separate folder for the
contacts..example: family, friends, business,......I get ready to send an
email........bring up the new message box.....click on tools.....click on
"select recepients" and the whole list comes back up unorganized..........I
have to sort thru them all to find my contacts......which is very time
consuming........I do not understand where you want me to "right click"
at........I have right clicked everywhere conceivable.......and there is no
right click enabled.......spell it out for me better
please......thanks!!!!!!!!! Your help is very much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

Left click on the WinMail toolbar Contacts Icon or go to Start | Programs |
Windows Contacts. That will bring up the contacts window that I was
referring to. I didn't mean the one from which you select a contact when
you are emailing a message.

There does not appear to be anyway I see to customize the window that pops
up when you click on the To button on the new mail message form.

Outlook Express is much easier to build contact groups. In Mail you must add
one contact at a time instead of just selecting from your email list and
moving it to the group contact.

what is the reason you can organize addresses into groups in the contacts
folder........yet when you need to use these groups ........they are
unavailable for use........seems useless.........if you can use them as
organized groups in mail or other programs........then why put them in groups
to start with? I am totally confused on this one......

I do not want to have a group.........I want to be able to use the "select
recepient" and select from the groups I organized......not have three hundred
email come up that I have to sort thru.....especially since I took the time
to organize contacts into separate groups such as friends, family,
business.........

I am also finding the way Contacts doesn't show the folders that I've created
the most counter-productive piece of crap I've seen in Vista so far. Aside
from Microsoft adding a calendar and a really bad junk email catcher, Outlook
Express was far more easier to use than Mail. The "Group By Name or Email"
feature does nothing to reslove this problem. I guess we'll have to hope that
Microsoft actually reads these postings and comes up with a "fix" that will
be part of a future update. Anyone care to contact MS direct?

For all you fellow losers out there that are running Vista Windows Mail and
miss their Groups from Outlook or Outlook Express, I have a found a
workaround after a week of trial and error.

I hope Microsoft is listening when I say: This is an unforgivable error and
a marketing blunder. My Outlook Express worked just fine. Why take it away
from me and force me to use a new product that has horrific shortcomings in
it? This has cost me days of my life to make it usable. PLEASE fix it right
quickly!

OK, I’m done venting. Now to the temporary workaround.

1. Open Windows Explorer, go to C:\users\you\documents\Contacts
2. Make new sub folders for “friendsâ€, “familyâ€, “workâ€, etc.
3. Move or copy contacts into each of these sub folders from the main folder
4. For each folder (I’ll use family as an example):
a. Open the folder
b. Double click on the first contact listed to open it’s properties
c. Go to the Home tab at the top of the screen
d. Enter the word “family†in the street field
e. Highlight “family†and hit Control-C to copy; click OK
f. For each member of the Family Folder, repeat this process
g. Use the Control-V to paste “family†and save typing
5. To use, open Windows Mail, create a new mail or forward an old one
6. Click the “TO†button; click “find†button; Look in = Windows Contacts
7. Put “family†in the address field; click the “find now†button
8. Select the desired emails (use your SHIFT and Control keys for shortcuts)
9. Click on the TO, CC or BCC buttons, click OK, and SEND
10. HINT: BCC stands for Blind Carbon Copy. PLEASE use it for most of your
forwards. It stops all the recipients from seeing all of the address of any
of the other recipients.

Hope this helps. Pat Cremin
