Ordered List Maximum?

I have an ordered list (<ol> & <li>) having more than 1000 items. At first,
I put all items into one page. But when the list exceeded 999 items, the
list counter reset itself to "000", rather than increasing to "1000". This
was true in the Preview view and in Internet Explorer. But in Design view,
it counted as it should.

Then I split the list into multiple pages, using a tag like "<ol
start="950">". Much to my surprise, the list continued to count past 999,
both in Preview and in IE.

Is this known behavior? Can I rely upon it?

Thanks.

Is a page w/ one of these long lists published online to look at
- Post a URL

If there is limitation, I expect it is w/ the browser and not FP

(Not that I, or many people, would want to visit a page w/ a 1000+ item list to scroll thru)
