Optimise my PC's?

Can anyone make some recommendations on software that I can use to optimise
my PC's, both windows XP and Windows 2000. Or possibly even software that
will scan my system and make recommendations for optimising my PC's?

Many tweaks aren't effective, and some may be harmful. Simple maintenance
