Trying to decide whether to go with Opera or Firefox and was wondering what the opinions
of each were.

TIA

Both very, very good, hard to seperate.
Only by trying will you know what suits your skill level & computer.
You can have lots of browsers installed, just a matter of choosing
which one you want as default.

If you are a geek ( I mean it in the nice way) you might want firefox
since its extensions site gives you a tremendus amount of things to
customize and expand your browsing experience.

I think that this is the one thing that will keep firefox going and going...

I prefer FF, due to the many useful extensions available,
although Opera may be a tad faster.
At any rate, they're both free...why not try 'em both and see
which one suits you?

I'll second the above. However IMO the Bookmarks in Opera are far
better than in FF.

I use Firefox even though I have Opera installed. I like using a third
party password program that does not integrate into Opera (otherwise I
would use it more). I like the Opera feature to make the webpage being
viewed fit your browser window. Opera is also faster in my opinion, but
at the cost of functionality that I want.

I agree with everyone here though. Try them both and see which you
prefer. You are not out much more than time and you may find that you
use them both.

I must be an easy geek, then. The tabification stuff settled it for
me. Not just the tabs, but center-button click on a link for open in
new tab, same thing on a tab to close it, move the tabs around, etc.
Makes working on fora easier.

I have been using Opera since version 3, it's now 8.5, and
wouldn't think of changing.

I went to it because you could customize the colors, fonts, and
font size of pages displayed. I like viewing pages with a
uniforms colors and fonts. You can now specify them in a
personal style sheet.

Also I could not live without the zoom feature to size pages in
my window.

Opera also has a feature to save web pages as text files.
Unlike IE, I don't know about FF, you can save them as text
files that you can manipulate with a word processor. IE screws
up saved text files with hard returns that make it impossible to
separate lines from paragraphs in a word processor. I print a
lot of pages to read. I like to read them in two column small
text to minimize the amount of paper that I use. I can do that
with Opera and WordPerfect.

I also could not live without the keyboard customization
function in Opera.

If Opera's instructions on how to use an external mail/news client
worked, I'd use Opera. But they don't, so FireFox is the choice for now.

That comment on webpage fitting window interests me since I run at 880 X
600 and often need to scroll horizontally. Does Opera take care of that?
If yes, a good URL to get it.

Opera seems faster to me.I dont like the rss feeds setup in opera which
is rather like a newsreader ,but prefer the toolbar set up of firefox
,though this is obviously personal choice. The one and only thing keeping
me from opera is the lack of roboform intergration.Opera has the
"wand" ,but theres no comparison to roboform really.

Doesn't Opera provide the same?

Opera is the best choice out-of-the-box. Limited functionality when
comparing to the vast amount of extensions available for FF, but the
available functionality is super-slick. Especially the mouse gestures,
which are poorly imitated in several FF extensions.

Firefox can be customized to do almost anything, if you can take the
time to find, test and customize the required extensions. These
extensions are of varying quality, may not always work as advertised,
frequently breaks between Firefox upgrades and can sometimes make
Firefox unusable in anything but safe mode.

Bottom line: Try both. And give them both time.

I use Opera as my default browser/RSS reader, and Dialog as my default
mail/news client. What didn't work for you?

I really like a lot of the features in Firefox, and being able to
customize with extensions.....but I LOVE the way I can navigate within
Opera using one finger on the 1,2,3 Q,A,Z,X keys....(tab thru tabs in
order, forward, back, find URL's in a page, etc....) If Firfox would do
that I might switch totally, but as it is, I will keep both.....

Speed in almost never enough different to be an issue.

Yes but seeing as how I can't master the wheel click I use a mouse
gesture to open in new tab.

It is an option that can be set and is not on by default. Just do a web
search for
Opera Browser
and you will find it

aw heck here you go

http://www.opera.com/

enjoy.

I use Firefox as my default browser.

But one thing I like in Opera is the ability to tile multiple tabs
either horizontally or vertically. I haven't yet come across an
extension for Firefox that enables this.

I use Fx 1.5.0.1 with the following extensions:

- Adblock
- Filterset.G Updater
- FasterFox
- BBCode
- NoScript

Opera is considered to be faster and a bit safer (~ secunia.com), but
for some reason I'm sticking with Fx. Can't use it for mail or news,
but I've got newsreaders and mail clients for those things...

I use both but am mostly using Opera for the speed (FF 1.5 consumes 300
MB on my box for some reason).
