Opening Word 2007 document + Bookmark method

HI

OS: Vista SP1
App: Word 2007 SP1

Prior to Word 2007 you could create a hyperlink to open a document and jump
to a specific Bookmark (ex. C:\Documents\testdocument.doc#bookmark3).

This feature appears to have been withdrawn. Anyone have any information on
this?

It works for me. Did you add the bookmark using the insert Hyperlink dialog
option?

Many thanks for replying to my question.

Yes, I created the Hyperlink within Outlook 2007 and choose the Bookmark
from within the 'Insert Hyperlink' dialog box. Bookmark contains no spaces,
the Document Open method runs as expected with Word 2002 & 2003.

I get a message displayed - [General failure the URL was:
"File:///c:\folder1\folder2\document.docx#bookmark2" The system could not
find the file specified].

If Word cannot find the file, it is probably attributable to a registration
issue - see how to re-register Word when problems crop up opening files
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ReRegisterWord.htm and if that doesn't
fix it select a document in Windows Explorer, right click and choose Open
with...

From the ensuing dialog select Word (winword.exe) and check the box to
always open with this application.

Many thanks for the suggestions. No change unfortunatley. Opening a DOCX
with a Hyperlink is not the problem.

Using a Hyperlink:
1. [c:\temp\document.doc#Bookmark1] the document opens but does not jump to
Bookmark (Bookmark1 exists).

2. [c:\temp\document.docx#Bookmark1] the document fails to open (Bookmark1
exists).

If you toggle the field the syntax is

{ HYPERLINK "D:\\My Documents\\Word documents\\Doc1.docx" \l "Bookmark1" }
or
{ HYPERLINK "D:/My Documents/Word documents/Doc1.docx" \l "Bookmark1" }

If Word is changing the syntax when you save, then uncheck Word Options >
Advanced > General > Web Options > Files > Update Links on Save.

My apologies I omitted an element... I created the Hyperlink to a Word
document in Outlook. Creating a Hyperlink in Word opens the document and
correctly jumps to the designated Bookmark.

Outlook allows me to create a Hyperlink and choose a Word Bookmark. However,
when the hyperlink is clicked it opens the document but fails to jump to the
Bookmark.

Hyperlinks within PowerPoint & Excel allow me to open the document but the
Bookmark feature is not available. Message reads - "Certain file formats,
such as XML, do not support bookmarks so you cannot create a hyperlink to a
bookmark in a file that does not support bookmarks. You can either hyperlink
to the file without any bookmarks, or change the file format so you can
insert bookmarks into and hyperlink to the bookmark".

What I am looking for is Hyperlink consistancy across all Office
Applications, or understand why it varies from one application to another.

Regards
Mike

I cannot comment on Outlook - ask in an Outlook forum.
Why the inconsistency varies? Different programming teams create the
different applications.

Hi Mike,

On 'consistency', the dialog box is basically just advising that there are no 'bookmarks' or internal name anchors, in a particular
file or File type that are 'reported' to the Insert Hyperlink dialog.

If this is an email you're sending from Outlook note that the ability to follow hyperlinks to a layer or location within a file can
depend on the security settings or the email client/version being used by the person who is trying to follow the links.

For a 'bookmark like' jump within an Excel file, if you have a named range in an Excel worksheet you may be able to jump to that
range location by adding to the end of the hyperlink, when you're typing it the name of the range to the end of the spreadsheet with
#rangename, e.g.,

...spreadsheet.xlsx#RangeName

Powerpoint has neither range names or bookmark settings. It's animation feature does have some naming/location capability but I've
not looked into trying to use them in a hyperlink.

Hi Mike
Did you ever get a solution to this? As far as I can see Microsoft no
longer support Hyperlinks to bookmarks in Word 2007. I find this very
surprising (that's putting it politely!).
I've found a way to achieve this more or less in PDF files - jump to a page #
Syntax http://localhost/virtualdirectory/text.pdf#page=4
Cheers, Nigel
