I have done something silly and somehow lost the facility to automatically
open and install .reg files.

The icon has changed from the little cubes to something that I do not
recognise.

I have tried to Google for the answer but I don't think I am asking the
right question.

Kindly advise how I restore the facility to automatically open reg files so
that they automatically install the values in the registry.

Thank you

Your problem is going to be complicated by the simple fact
that you need to edit the registry in order to allow file
extension recognition for registry keys.
To work around this I recommend using restore to roll your
system back to before you had the problem or restore from
any backup you might have. If you cannot or will not do
this I won't help any further unless you have a good
reason for playing with the registry without knowing how
to get into it without help.

Glenwood,

Download the .reg file association from here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_regfile.zip

Extract the .reg file from the compressed file and save it to C:\

Click Start | Run | and type "Regedit C:\<filename>.reg"

Hi BC,

System restore not required. He can choose OPEN-WITH (.reg file) and choose
c:\windows\regedit.exe, with the "always open......." checked
