Opening Outlook 2007 with IE 8

I am using Windows 7, Outlook 2007 and IE 8. When I try to open Outlook from
the envelope icon on the toolbar in IE 8, I get the error message that "Could
not perfor this operation because the default mail client is not properly
installed". This was working fine until a few days ago. I checked to insure
that my current email program is my default under Set Program defaults. Any
ideas out there?

Is Outlook configured in its own options to be the default e-mail client?
Is Outlook selected as the default mail app in Internet Options -> Programs?

The following is an issue with Windows, not Internet Explorer:

"Read Mail" button does not work in Internet Explorer

The above applies to Windows XP and probably to Windows Vista. I don't have
Windows 7 but the info might still apply. Since this is an issue with the
OS and not with the e-mail or web browser apps, you might want to ask in the
Microsoft community for Windows 7 found at:
