Is it a PowerPoint (pps/ppt) attachment? Do you have PowerPoint or the
PowerPoint reader installed?

Hi Tom:

Thanks for your fast reply...Tell me how to check for the Power Point info
you asked about. The attachment has the pps. with it.

Thanks again........Howard

Unless you have PowerPoint installed on your computer, you
might want to download and install this program:

PowerPoint Viewer 2003

You can't open a PowerPoint file unless you have PowerPoint (or a PowerPoint
viewer or another program that knows how to handle PowerPoint files)
installed.

You can't open an Excel file unless you have Excel (or an Excel viewer or
another program that knows how to handle Excel files) installed

You can't open a Word file unless you have Word (or an Word viewer or
another program that knows how to handle Word files) installed

and so on. In general, you can't open any file of a particular type unless
you have installed a program that knows how to handle that file type.

When you install PowerPoint, it creates a link between the file extension
..pps and the PowerPoint program. That link is called an "association."
Similar associations are created between Excel and .xls files, Word and .doc
files, etc, when those programs are installed.

The error message you got is actually misleading. It assumes that you have
an appropriate program installed, but the needed association hasn't been
created (or was somehow lost). That is actually seldom the case, and it's
far more likely that you simply have never installed an appropriate program.

In this case, you're received a pps file as an attachment, but can't open
it, and the reason is very likely that you don't have PowerPoint (or some
similar program) installed. You can buy PowerPoint, but that's overkill, if
all you want to do is look at this file. Instead you may want to download
the free PowerPoint viewer at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...27-43ab-4f24-90b7-a94784af71a4&displaylang=en

or http://tinyurl.com/3nend

That will permit you view PowerPoint files, but not modify or create them
yourself.

Hi Ramesh:

Thank you for your detailed reply...I clicked on your site, followed the
steps for Manual Fix and this message came up..."The specified program
couldnot be found, make sure file name and path are correct"..What do you
think I might be doing wrong. I have checked everything I know to check, and
all seems OK.

Thank you for your help.

Howard,

Have you installed "PowerPoint Viewer 2003", as per the advice you received
earlier? If not, download the viewer from here, and install it:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...27-43ab-4f24-90b7-a94784af71a4&displaylang=en

The viewer's executable (pptview.exe) will be present in the following
location (by default):

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\PowerPoint Viewer

Yes have installed per the download instructions. It saved in My Documents,
and is shown listed on the Programs per you note. When I go to Program,
click the item and click Open, it opens My Documents, but it does not show up
in the list of Documents. I don't know what happens.

Thanks again for your help.

Howard,

I was referring to the "Program Files" folder, and not the Start menu
Programs listing.

Two question I'd like to ask:

1. Have you installed the PowerPoint Viewer application already?
2. Are you able to launch the PowerPoint Viewer by typing this command (in
Start/Run) ?

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\PowerPoint Viewer\pptview.exe

I'm sure you are running out of Patients with me, but I'm still batting Zero.

To answer you questions:
1-Yes
2- It launches Microft Viewer for about one second, and then My
Document page shows up.

I did open My Computer...C Disk, Program Files and there was a notice Files
Are Hidden, but I did open, and could not find a file for Power Point Viewer.

Are you ready to give up on me? Thanks very much for working with me.

Howard,

It's now clear that the viewer is already installed. Try saving the .PPS
file (that came as a mail attachment) to Desktop. Then double-click the file
to view it. If you receive any error message, include the detail in your
reply.

That did the trick. I saved to Desktop, opened the email attachment, and
saw the photos that were sent to me.

Thanks so very much for all your help. I'm saving your website for future
problems.

I plan to make a small donation to your web site. Good work.

You're welcome Howard. Saving to the hard drive and opening it, should work.
The fix documented in my website (ppsopen.htm page) tells you how to resolve
the problem where the user is unable to open a .PPS attachment directly from
Outlook Express. The latter problem is seen in Windows XP SP2 systems with
PowerPoint Viewer 2003 installed. Note that PowerPoint Viewer 97 does not
have this problem.

I am having the same problem, I just installed service pack 2. I also
installed KB911567, a patch for outlook express. The computer manufactor
recommended that I uninstall the patch. I have not done that. I also can
save the attachment and open it but not from outlook express. I have used
powerpoint viewer for years without any issues. Using yahoo mail I can open
pps attachments.
