Hi, John.
Is there
anything that can be done short of getting a copy of Access 97.
No. Prior to Access 2002, one could not open an MDE file from an earlier
version. Access 97 and Access 2000/2002/2003 formats are different, so the
Access 97 database file must be converted when opening it from the later
versions. Unfortunately, only MDB files can be converted. No MDE file can
be converted.
Fortunately, Access 2002 and 2003 can use the same default Access 2000
format and can run that earlier version.
As an alternative, you can link to the tables in the Access 97 database and
use them in an Access 2000 or later database with Access 2003. You may also
import the tables, queries and macros into an Access 2000/2002/2003 database.
HTH.
