opening mail

hi,
running vista and cant open emails with attachments, when i try, i am asked
to " set associations"
how do i do that

Does it say what type of file to set associations for (the part of the file
name starting with the last period)?
 
Which type of attachments, .pdf, .doc, etc.?
Can you save the attachments and open them outside WM?
