I am using Windows XP Home Edition. When I double click on my local drives
from "My Computer", it immediately goes to "search" mode rather than "open"
or "explore". How can I reset this?

Hey there Slapfire:

Right click your disired drive, and a dialogue box will appear, click on the
explore option or open option. While you have the file open go to the Control
Panel, click on Folder Options, click on the view tab and scroll down the
list and put a check mark in the box next to: "Remember each folder's view
settings". Click apply and close the folders property box.

This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries via
File Types dialog, to add a "Command Prompt here" or "Print Directory"
feature for drives / folders. (example)

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321186

Resolution:

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix this problem:
(Tip from David Candy)

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

-or-

Fix "Search" Opens Instead of Explorer:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm

-or-

To fix this manually via registry:

If this problem is seen for Drives:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

If this problem is seen for folders:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

Your suggestion did the trick! Did exactly what you said and got the exact
results I expected! Now when I click on a drive's icon it "opens" rather
than "searches". I ran a "registery cleaner" and although everything else is
running fine, this was the only "bad thing" that has happened so far.
Thank you!

First try this :
Start > Run
Type "regsvr32 /i shell32.dll" (Without quotes) > Click OK

If that doesn't work, then :
