opening folders from windows explorer

Yesterday my computer started behaving differently when opening folders from
windows explorer. Doing what I have always done I now get directed to the
search results screen when previously the folder would open. I do not
remember changing any settings at all. Now when i open windows explorer and
double click on a folder the search results screen opens. I close this and
now right click on a folder and the pop up list appears with a few options
one of which is again "search" ( in bold text) and others like, explore, open
etc etc. I click on open and the folder opens ok. Why is it now that on the
normal double click the search results screen appears?

Start>run and type

regedit

locate the following keys
HKey_Class_Root\Drive\shell
HKey_Class_Root\Directory\shell
HKey_Class_Root\Folder\shell

In the left hand pane locate Default and set the value to

none

Thanks William but I cannot find the keys you mention. I can find
HKEY_CLASS_ROOT but nothing further. I am not a skilled computer operator.

Double Click the HKey_Class_Root key then locate the Drive. Double-click the
Drive key then locate the "shell". Click on the "shell" key. In the
left-hand pane find "default". Double click "default" and enter a value of

none.

Do the same for the following keys.

HKey_Class_Root\Directory\shell
HKey_Class_Root\Folder\shell

CAUTION: Be very careful in the registry, if you are not sure what you are
doing I would find someone that is capable of doing this for you. You could
really mess your computer up.

Also, have you ran scans for spyware, malware, or adware. If not I would
recommend downloading and scanning your machine with some free programs.

I made a mistake....should have read In the ***right****-hand pane find
"default". Double click "default" and enter a value of

Not for HKey_Class_Root\Folder\shell, William.

It should read "value not set" which is different from "none"

This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries via
File Types dialog, to add a "Command Prompt here" or "Print Directory"
feature for folders. (example)

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321186

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix this problem:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
(Courtesy of David Candy)

To fix this manually via registry:

If this problem is seen for Drives:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

If this problem is seen for folders:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

Thank you all for your inputs. I was very concerned about going into the
registry as I am not all that au fait with computers. However I think that I
have cured the problem. I did this by entering windows explorer and
selecting tools and "folder options" then "file types". I then found the
entries for FOLDER and FILE FOLDER. Selecting first FOLDER and ADVANCED tab
the list included "explore" and "open" neither selcted so I clicked on open
and made it the default. I then went back to the file types window this
time selecting FILE FOLDER and ADVANCED. Here I found listed only FIND and
nothing else. I clicked on new and entered "OPEN" and guessed at programme
to be used as windows explorer. I then highlighted OPEN and set it as
default. Ok to everything and it worked fine. Relief. I did however seem
to loose the search facility in the start window but recovered this easily.
How do you rate this from a simple computer amateur

Hi Mystified,

Entering the registry was not required. Registering the Shell32.dll fixes it
(as per my earlier response). Now, you've added an 'open' verb for File
Folders, which is also not required though it may fix the problem. One side
effect that you _may_ experience is the 'open' action will open each folder
in a new window, irrespective of your choice in Folder Options, General Tab.

Still I'd suggest you remove the additional 'open' entry from File Folder
(Now, the only way is to edit the registry to remove that option)

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]

Backup the key to a REG file and delete the 'open' verb there. Now, type
this command in Start/Run:

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
