Opening files.

I have annoying probelm. When I try to open a file in word, or Excel or
Acrobat. I get the drop down menu, when I click on the "Look In" arrow to
select the folder I want, I have to wait approx. 20 seconds before it
responds. This delay is so frustrating, can anyone offer a solution?
