opening files as read only problems

T

TV

We are having problems with some of the computers in our
office trying to open a password protected document as
Read-Only. Out of 6 computers we've tried, 3 worked and 3
didn't. We went into the permission settings of the 3 that
didn't and changed them to match the 3 that did work. They
still won't open. We've figured out ways around it,
however, it doesn't prevent us from opening and modifying
the document instead of looking at it in read only.
We're using Word 97, Windows NT 4.0 serv. pak 6. All the
workstations are operating Windows for Workstations.
Any help out there?
Thx

G'Day 'TV',

The 'Read only' recommendation is usually set
during the FIRST 'Save' of the Document which,
'cos it don't yet got a name, is really "Save as".

Open the document (for modification), and
select File>Save as, do not change the name
but select 'Security options' from the 'Tools'
menu in the 'Save as' dialog box.

Check the box 'Read only recommended' box,
and set password(s) to suit.

Select 'Save'.

Close the document. Test what you have done
by re-opening it.
