Opening Excel Workbook

I have used Excel several times, but when I tried to start new project, the
font box and font size is in gray and I can't bold type the worksheet or
type anything in the cells or rows. Please help!
 
This happens with a new workbook in which version of Excel?

What occurs when you try to type anything in the cells?

Error message? Nothing?
