When I open a document in WORD (2000), all my tables and graphics are
displayed intext format. The graphics look like some type of html and the
tables are displayed in text format, no borders or lines.

Possibly you're opening the document in "Recover Text from Any File"
form. Look at the "Files of type" box at the bottom of the File > Open
dialog to make sure it says "Word document" or "All files".

In the File Open dialog, change the "Files of type" setting from "Recover
Text from Any File" to "Word Documents" or "All Word Documents."
