Opening a .xfd file

My son who is stationed in Japan with the Air Force
recently sent me a file with the .xfd extension. I have
tried everything I can to view the file but still unable
to do so. Can someone tell me how I can view it, it would
be greatly appreciated.

Although this is a dated thread, I googled .xfd, as I also had a file from the U.S. Air Force that I needed to open (why do they still use .xfd files?) Anyway, I downloaded the PureEdge viewer, and it worked really well. Although it doesn't allow you to convert an .xfd file to a .doc file, or to select all text in the document.
