First, don't open them directly from the email attachment; save them to the hard drive first and work on them there. The second thing is that if you have Word 2003 or earlier, you need to download the Compatibility Pack from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466 and install it to be able to read the Word 2007 format.
