Opening a Word 2007 Doc in Word 2003

I just received a Word 2007 doc with the extension *.dotx. It's a template
document. I can't seem to open it. I've downloaded the Office 2007
compatability program, but that doesn't seem to be any help. Any suggestions?

Is this the only solution? Shouldn't these MS products be backwards
compatible?

Thanks for answering...

"Backward Compatibility" means that a new version of a program can both read
& write in the format of 1 or more previous versions - which Word 2007 can,
and is what JoAnn is suggesting you have the 2007 user take advantage of.

You're asking for an *older* version to be able to use the *newer* version's
format which is not the same thing. The Compatibility Pack actually does a
remarkable job, but in some cases the file involved may employ features of
the *new* version that simply can't be translated to or supported by the
older program.

A new version that can't do anything the old version did wouldn't be much of
an *upgrade*, would it?:-)

Hi Casee,

Unfortunately, while document formats (.docx and .docm)from Office 2007 are supported in WOrd 2000, 2002 and 2003 by the
compatability converters, 2007 template files (.dotx) are not supported.
