Opening a doc in Word

When I open a document in word that I created or copied it opens in what I
think is Java Script or some other language that I do not reconize. In order
to get it in the correct format I have to click on the file in My documents
and open it in word. Otherwise I get this script that is usless to me.
Anyone out there have any ideas why this is happening. I am sure that there
is something ( asetting) that I need to change however, I have not a clue as
to what it is. HELP!!!

Try right clicking on a .doc file, go down to Open with, then the
Choose program...., select Microsoft Office Word and tick the box that
says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file", then
click OK.
