Lately when I double click on a Word icon, the program opens, but not the
document. I then have to go into File/Open and manually open the document I
want. What have I done to cause this and how can i correct it???

If you start Windows in Safe mode does the problem go away? If it does, you
have some kind of management or administration tool installed that's
interfering.

It appears that you are right - now the question is which program is causing the problem? - I have Counterspy, Zone Alarm, I Hate Spam, and Norton Anti-virus. I guess I can shut them down, one at a time. Thank you for your help.

Yes, you'll have to try one at a time. FWIW, NAV is notorious (although that doesn't necessarily mean it's at fault, but it's the one I'd shut down first <g>)

I tried them all and, as you suggested, found that NAV was the culprit. However, their "Help" section is helpless in providing info as to how to turn off the Office scan option. So I tried the NAV live chat and got an answer that was wrong and then they hung up on me so now I have been on a phone queu for the past 40 minutes waiting to talk to a live person. WHAT A SYSTEM!!!!

Here's how it works in my version of NAV:

1. Open Norton AntiVirus (right-click on the Systray icon and choose this
option).

2. Click on the Options button at the top of the dialog. You may then need
to choose Norton AntiVirus from a menu.

3. In the Options dialog, click on Miscellaneous (menu on the left)

4. Clear the check box for "Enable Office Plug-in."

5. OK out and close NAV.
