"Open With" Dialog

E

eBob.com

I just tried to open a csv file on my Vista system. Apparently Vista does
not know that Excel can open csv files. So I went to "Open With" but Excel
was not among the "Recommend Programs" nor "Other Programs". I fumbled
around and ended up with something with an Excel icon and title of "2007
Microsoft Office component" in the "Recommend Programs" list. But that
doesn't do it. Finally now when I use the Browse button I think that I am
finding the real Excel program but it doesn't end up in "Recommend
Programs". I'm guessing that the thing with the Excel icon and title of
"2007 Microsoft Office component" somehow is preventing the real Excel
program from being added to the "Recommend Programs."

Also, because I have sometimes opened csv files with Notepad and WordPad
they are in the "Recommend Programs."

How do I remove items from "Recommended Programs?"

Thanks, Bob

Hi, Bob.

There are other ways, but the "official" method is to click Control Panel |
Default Programs | Associate a file type of protocol with a specific
program, then select .csv and be sure it is set to Excel. If it is not,
then click Change program... and browse to find Excel.

Thank you RC, but "Control Panel | Default Programs | Associate a file type
or protocol with a specific program" takes me to the same "Open With" dialog
and the same problem that I described in my original message below. I can't
make an association between .csv files and Excel.

Thanks, Bob

Thank you RC, but "Control Panel | Default Programs | Associate a file type

make an association between .csv files and Excel.

That's kind of funny, I must say. I didn't believe what you said, so I
renamed a random file's extension to .csv so I could try to do that
association, and as soon as I accepted the new name, it acquired an
Excel icon.

Then just to see what's up, I right-clicked on the file name, and Open
With already had Excel in its list.

Try right-clicking on the file in question, choose Open With, and then
click on Choose Default Program.

Thanks for replying Gene. The problem seems to be in the Open With dialog.
I have tried your solution and others and they all go through Open With and
'achieve' the same result; i.e. result in the same problem. Late last night
I tried a new Google search using

"2007 microsoft office component" association

and the first hit in the list was for this site:
http://computerhaven.info/forum where several people have discussed the
problem (with several office components) and have received the solution. So
far as I can tell the solution has never been posted. But when you report
the problem one of the gurus there will PM you the solution. So I completed
my registration last night and I am just about to post a message asking for
the solution.

Thanks again for your interest and reply.

You say that "Apparently Vista does not know that Excel can open csv files".
This is because Excel is not part of Vista, it is part of Microsoft Office.
To associate csv files with Excel you have to have Excel installed.
Perhaps you have a trial version of Office 2007 which has now expired.

OK, sorry my ideas weren't adequate. Many thanks for the feedback.

I hope the computerhaven gurus can help (but their's is an odd way to
do business, IMO).

Hi, Bob.

I should have suggested MVP Ramesh Srinivasan's site sooner:
File association fixes for Windows Vista
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.html

It seems that Ramesh is the only one who has figured out this file
association puzzle and provided the fix. I've used and recommended his site
for years.

Thanks, RC. As in my previous post, "OpenWithAdd" should take care of the
problem.
