Freebasic is a open source Basic compiler for Dos, Windows & Linux.
Freebasic is made to be compatiable with many of the commands from
Quickbasic while adding many features. You can read about the features
of Freebasic at
http://www.freebasic.net/index.php/about?section=features & you can
download it from http://www.freebasic.net/index.php/download .
Even though this compiler has support for Quickbasic which is a DOS
prog & even though Freebasic has a DOS version, don't try to use
Quickbasic libaries because it is a 16-bit Dos prog while Freebasic is
a 32-bit Dos compiler.
I would suggest getting the Windows or Linux versions because these are
the most advanced & they have support for external libaries such as
Allegro/SDL (the most popular game programming libaries), Bass/Bassmod,
FMOD, FreeImage, OpenGL, Glut, LUA & many other libaries. To see the
libaries currently support by Freebasic goto
http://www.freebasic.net/index.php/link . Now if your favorite libary
isn't support by Freebasic, you can write a wrapper so that Freebasic
can support it. Now Freebasic is a command-line prog, so if you don't
like command-line progs, then download FBide which is a GUI for
Freebasic & it can be downloaded from http://fbide.sourceforge.net/ .
