If anyone is familiar with this suite, can you answer me a question, or
point me to an ng that can?

One nice feature of Word, is the ability to split the window into two panes
so you can see different parts of the same document at the same time. I
can't seem to find this feature with OO. Please tell me it can be done and
let me know how.

Do you mean split it in to columns? If so, its under the format menu.

I believe he means two viewports....usually one above the other...ideally,
both windows would show any edits made in either window.

Ceg is correct. Do you or anyone here know the answer though?

Decades ago I used to use a word processor in DOS that had multiple windows.
I can't remember the name, but it was the predecessor of Boxer. The renamed
Boxer version added the ability to have multiple columns as well as a couple
other odds and ends.

Don't think that you can split windows like MS Office can. You can open a
new window with the same document in it: Window > New Window. However, since
Openoffice is freeware, such detailed questions can be best answered by
downloading the application and trying it yourself. The answer to your
question could have been found by searching the help index in the help
facility(that's how I found it).

Hope this helps.

I guess they let you out on a daypass, huh?

Well, C, thanks for that sepia-tinged stroll down memory lane. . .

In the meantime. . . does anyone else have an answer to my original
question?

Yeah, tried that. I was hoping maybe the feature was buried deep down and I
just hadn't found it.

There's no reference to any such ability in the help file so I guess it
doesn't exist.

No, it doesn't. If you want, you can petition for the feature in this
bug report thread:

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=19291

Also, this probably isn't useful to you but I'll mention it just in
case, it was available in StarOffice 5.2. Why they dropped it, I have no
idea.

The split window feature appears in Calc, and there is a help file entry for
it (window / splitting), but I don't see anything similar for Write.
