Since my teachers love making things painful for me I have to go
through a zillion presentations where every other slide is a "Need
Quicktime and TIFF decompresser" logo. Is there any way to open these
things so I can actually see what the picture is on a PC?

I don't believe so; you'd need to open the presentation on a Mac.
As far as I know, there's no QT TIFF decompresser available for PCs.

Still, it'd be worth saving the presentation as HTML to see what appears in the
folder of supporting files PPT makes. Usually PPT includes at least two copies
of each image, one at reduced size for viewing in the HTML, PLUS the original
image. It'd be interesting to see what it gives you for the original images.
