I'm creating a new "band biography" page for an existing website in which I'd
like the page to just load the images and have the text descriptions open in
a new window or pop-up when you hover over an image. Not sure which is the
best way to go. I have downloaded Spawn in case pop-up is our answer, but
then how do I prevent "pop-up stoppers" from blocking the new window?

Thanks in advance, this newsgroup has always been very helpfull.

Hi Mary Jo,

Pop-up blockers won't block Spawn pop-ups. They only block pop-ups that are
not user-initiated (like pop-ups that appear when you load a page or unload
a page.) I personally hate such pop-ups, so I intentionally did not
included the ability to create them in Spawn.

Users of Windows XP SP2, can block all popups, as well as New Windows.

Ok, so what would be a good work-around. I'm currently using a table with
images and text and looking to make the page quicker to load and look more
"hip". You can check it out at www.funkdujour.com. Any suggestions will be
most appreciated.

There is no workaround if the user choose to do this. However it is not the default.

The best solution to speed page loading is the keep your large image at no more than 400 pixels wide
and 50 kb or less, and your thumbnail image file size as small as possible.

They can, but it requires the user to explicitly choose to block all
pop-ups. It would be interesting to see how many people do that, but I'm
sure it's an extremely small number of people.

Why do people want a pop-up blocker? Because they don't want pop-ups to
appear automatically. The default settings do that. I can think of no
situation where a user of a site would complain about a new window popping
up when they clicked a link. After all, when you click a link, it's because
you WANT to see what that link points to! :)

Jim,

There are still some popups, that popup blockers do not catch, but SP2 does a great job.

I did indicate that blocking all popups was something a user had to do. Bottom-line, we as web
developers can not be sure that popups will work for all visitor to our site for whatever reason.

As I do or re-do projects, I am attempting to remove all popups (all require a user to click).

I agree with the part about Web developers not being able to guarantee that
pop-ups will happen. However, removing pop-ups is not always the best idea!

If you use Spawn to create your pop-ups, if pop-ups are blocked or script is
turned off, it will fail gracefully and simply link to the file in the
existing window.

The other reason for me removing popups, is so that the content within them can be indexed by the
search engines.

Spawn is great add-in. However I have a 5 line popup script that I have been using since 1998, that
I just copy, paste and modify as needed. I try to avoid working via dialogs when and where ever I
can.

Well now, thought I had a clearer vsion of what I wanted to do, but now
you've gone and "muddied the waters" a little. Didn't mean to start a
mini-war on pop-up vs. no pop-up, I'm just really looking to make the page
"slicker" than the "basic looking" page I'm already using. It's very
important for the band to get this information across to prospective clients
and be more "hip" in the process.

Shoot, this isn't a war! It's debate on an issue!

I wonder at what point debate started to become seen as a bad thing? I
don't mean this as criticism of you, Mary Jo. I have just noticed that in
today's world that is hell-bent on being politically correct, it is seen as
a bad thing if people don't agree. Sadly, the art of debate is going to be
lost forever. :(

Just an observation.

No criticism taken. Debate, mini-war - call it what you'd like. I can
"debate" with the best of them myself. I'm not trying to be politically
correct, just felt the need to "duck and cover" for a few seconds and now I'm
showing my age, oops!

You both have valid points - well taken, but as I said, now a little
confused as to which direction I should take with this page. The band is
happy with the site - it should be, it's my husband's band - but I'm bored
with it and looking to jazz it up and make it more streamlined and
professional looking. Suggestions are most welcome. Goto: www.funkdujour.com

I think I would make the yellow logo a bit smaller and less bright. I would
also get rid of the large "HOME" banner and like banners. I would remove
the scrolling marquee.

Yes, better menus will make the site much nicer as well!

I am using a "stock" FP theme for the site. Will take your suggestions and
modify it.
Thanks for the feedback.

Mary Jo,

Number one rule for making a professional-looking Web site: Don't use
FrontPage stock themes! :)

Dialog boxes slowdown the process for me in any application, and with FP Add-ins, all interaction is
via a dialog, and if you attempt modify the code in HTML/Code View, FP will overwrite your changes.

I design my pages in Normal/Design view, then I work in HTML/Code view, mainly because I am add
ASP/VBScript.

Some add-ins are designed so that if you change the code in code view, it
will overwrite the changes. Mine are not. :) You can add script with
Spawn and modify it all you want to. It will not be changed back. You are
free to change what you wish.

Yes, I thought of that. :)
