Does anyone know what causes a Windows XP screen to "reset" and then have to
recreate/repaint all of the onscreen icons?

Is there no one that knows why this occurs? It happens on my wife's
computer as well so I am assuming that it's not a new or unknown thing. The
computer won't do anything else until the icons are all repainted.

Anybody?

Thanks Iceman. The icons don't move around. They just lose their specific
graphic for a moment and then one by one are repainted, locking the machine
while repainting.

Your icon cache may have become corrupt. Try deleting it, a new one will be
created on startup.

IconCache.db is a hidden file located in:

%homepath%\Local Settings\Application Data
