ONLY XP's safe mode allows connection to network?

I recently switched between operating systems from win98 to XP.. i have 2 PC's so I'm sharing the internet connection with wingate... however, after installing XP, i can't even connect to the internet not to talk about sharing it. I have 2 LAN cards installed, I've got a VIA motherboard (with integrated sound, btw, the sound seems to be messed up also cause there is no sound... even with the latest drivers...)
I have DHCP enabled, so NIC should get the IP and all the stuff, but it gets a weird IP with a weird subnet mask, no gateway, no DNS suffix..

When I start windows in safe mode with networking, it's all fine, the connections are working, nothings wrong (except the sound, but that's another issue)... I can access the internet ..

My guess is that on normal startup some kind of driver or service that is loaded is causing this problem... i tried using selective startup (msconfig) and turned off all WIN.ini, system.ini, services and startup items, it still didn't work..

any ideas?

I only hope you have not been infected already by the msblaster
worm or one of its variants.

First of all, enable the XP ICF on the Ethernet connection
that goes out to the Internet, and boot to
Safe Mode With Networking and go to the Windows Update
site and scan for updates and install all XP critical updates and
then reboot.

Go back to Safe Mode With Networking and update your AV
and then scan the system for worms / viruses.

It sounds like you did not use MSCONFIG properly for
troubleshooting this issue.

My guess is you have a broken or improperly configured
third-party firewall.

Here is how to use MSCONFIG in this case:

With MSCONFIG in Normal Startup -
Click on the Services tab -
At the bottom border (not in the window) -
Tick on "Hide all Microsoft services" -
Now you will only see the non Microsoft services -
Click on "Disable all" button -
Click "Apply" at the bottom -
Click on the Startup tab -
Click on "Disable all" button -
Click "Apply" and then "Close" at the bottom -
Restart
Check MSCONFIG and make sure that all
non Microsoft services and Startup items stayed
unchecked -
Click "Cancel" at the bottom -
If you can then connect to the Internet
then you know its one of the non Microsoft services
or Startup items or combination of them that is the
source of your issue.
