only safe mode works :(

I began having this trouble a few days ago. XP suddenly freezes requiring a
reboot. Gradually the usable time before a freeze has become shorter and
shorter. Now I can run XP only in safe mode as within 1 minute of normal
bootup it's frozen.

software or hardware problem ?
any ideas ?

Easy to find out: Boot into Safe Mode, then use System Restore to return
the machine to a point before this problem started. If it's a software
problem
then this will solve it. You have to be quick, of course! Click Start / Run,
then past this string into the run box for a real quick entry:

c:\Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Just some important questions: Your problem with booting into normal mode -
smells of a virus.

Are you using the Windows built in "Internet Connection Firewall" - or
other firewall software such as Zone Alarm when surfing the internet? Have
you scanned for malware lately with tools like Adaware SE and /or Spybot
Search and Destroy? Is an Antivirus installed on your PC - and is it using
current viral defs?

thanks for trying to help, but restore doesn't work to solve this. My suspect
is mobo, but I'm upgrading soon so fingers crossed :)

mate, I didn't say XP won't boot up, but that it freezes after a few minutes.

Yes, better firewall than you suggest- comodo
yes, better AV than you suggest - BitDefender

your for-a-nOOb advice makes me laugh,as only a while ago I was just that.
thanks for your endearing advice :)

I know what you said, I can read and comprehend. If its freezing after a
min once you're on your desktop - as you contend - in Normal mode, then
something is /or could be causing your OS to lock up. It depends largely on
how well your system has been running up to the point your problem with
"freezing " began to occur. You stated this had been occuring within the
last couple of days. Behavior like this is also common with some types of
malware, and trojan viruses.

Great... you're using Comodo for your firewall, and Bitdefender for an
anti-virus. I made no suggestions for an Antivirus program, and could care
less what you use. I was asking if you had used a "malware scanner" such
as Adaware SE or Spybot Search and destroy - btw neither of these are
firewalls. Then I asked if you had an installed antivirus program - with
current definition files on your PC.

Glad you found my noobish response to your post so amusing as to laugh. If
it is hardware related, and you're so smart - you wouldn't have found a need
to post your question to this forum right?

"software or hardware problem?

Obviously, you've never heard of K.I.S.S (Keep it simple stupid.)

Have a good day, Mr used to be a Noob.

Exactly, you explained your first post in such detail, that I found it
amusing. Sorry.

You too,
and please don't get so uptight and take it so seriously. Actually you were
only trying your best to help, allbeit in rather a lot of detail :)

I'm sorry if you took offense, just call me an idiot then.

Yes, enough said. And no I'm not angry or offended :) Its only my sincere
hope Mani, that you figure out what your problem is with being able to stay
on your desktop in normal mode - without the OS freezing up and forcing you
to reboot.

My feeling is: since Firewalls and AV software can't be expected to catch
everything, everytime - that scanning for Malware in Safe Mode would also
make sense, just to make absolutely certain, before labeling this as being
a suspected hardware problem. Malware in one sense of looking at it - is a
'software related' issue.

Good luck.

I think you should disable the "restart on system failure" feature:

Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab.
Under "Startup & Recovery," click Settings. Under "System Failure,"
uncheck the box in front of "Automatically restart." (from
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.php )

Then, search your event logs for errors:

If it will run in safe mode for extended periods without freezing, I doubt
it is hardware.
I would run spyware & virus scans in safe mode to find out if you have any
malware.

You probably have some backgound app running that is messing up your pc.
