Hey all. I've got a problem.

I have a broadband internet connection which I've
confirmed with my provider has two IP addresses connected
to it. After upgrading to SP 2 only one machine can access
the web at anytime. The machine that cannot access the
web, is unable to obtain an ip address... (other than the
169.....) I connect to the cable modem through a d link
switch. which must be working since both machines can
access the web independltly just not at the same time. One
machine runs win 98 the other XP like I said this only
started after I upgraded to SP2. Thanks for any help.

this may help. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net
XP SP2 enables firewall by default

To help protect XP computer against viruses or security threats, XP SP2
enables firewall by default. If you experience some issues after installing
XP SP2, you may want to adjust firewall settings.

I've tried this no luck. Still only the XP or 98 machine
can connect at any one time.

What are the IP addresses of the two computers?

Has the ISP told you the two reserved IP addresses?

One computer. (The one that can get an IP from the
service provider.) gets an IP of 68.148.... Don't want to
place anymore numbers there for my own security. The
other one gets an address of 169...... Also I forgot to
metion before, to get the other computer on the net, I
have to reset the cable modem before renewing the
address. The ISP told me everything was to be left on the
automatic settings. That windows will obtain the IP
automatically.

Sounds like your ISP has something configured incorrectly. If either PC can
access the Internet and gets a valid IP address when it's the first one
booted, but either PC fails when it's the second one booted then the
networking is clearly fine, your ISP is simply not allowing the second PC to
get a valid IP address lease.

I'd say exactly the same (just in case you want a second opinion
:-).

A second thought. You can always solve this problem by using a
router, ideally by buying one, or by using ICS (Internet
Connection Sharing). Actually this may be a better solution
because it shields your internal network (read
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxCable.htm for details).

On the other hand, the ISP should really fulfill its promises.
