Only desktop and its subdirectories show in "browse for folder" di

This usually occurs when I am attempting to install a program or extract an
archived file: I am given a choice where to install or extract a file by
means of the "browse for folder" dialogue box, which shows only my desktop
and any subdirectories it may have on it. As a result, I cannot select any
other place to install or extract files; just the desktop.

Dear Mr. Stinky,
That dialogue box IS ASKING YOU exactly where you want to put the extracted
file. For example, if you want to put it in a folder named "Junk" which
resides in your Programs folder, when the dialogue box appears, click on
"Browse" and then just navigate to:
My Computer>Your_Hard_drive_name:>Program Files>Junk.

Then, the file should go there. This dialogue box appears on any file that
you are going to save for the first time. You always have the option to
Browse, even when you install a software program.

I like the Mr Stinky bit.

The problem, though is that the options givin in the resulting "browse
for" box only shows my desktop and its subdirectories; no "My Computer" or
any of its attached drives. I wish I could post a screen capture to show
what I mean.

Some "browse folders" dialogue boxes also have a place where one can
manually enter the location where they want to install or place the expanded
contents, so I'm in the clear, there, but in others, one is given only a
graphical representation, and in my case it shows only the desktop, from
which I can not go up to higher directories.

The Desktop is at the very top of the directory tree. If you click on that,
it should show "C:\" and you can go down into the directory you want from
there. Anytime you see the desktop listed, you can't go any higher than that,
only down..

Alas, the problem is that when the "browse folders" dialogue appears, desktop
is in its expanded state, showing only what is on the desktop; no more.
Clicking desktop merely hides the subdirectories that are on it.

I'm afraid that this is not a problem of simple "operator error". The
normal save/open dialogue boxes work fine. It is only on select dialogues
that this occurs. Unfortunately it is in these circumstances wherein being
able to select a place other than the desktop is necessary.

If you have TweakUI for Windows XP handy, go to "my computer" and select
the "special folders" option. Opt to change the location of one of those
folders. You will then be confronted with a "browse for folders" dialogue
box that is presenting to me only the desktop and its subdirectories. Yours
will likely show the desktop and the rest of the system contents, as well.

What happens when the Desktop appears in the browse dialogue and you double
click on "My Computer? Do the sub-directories appear? Since the root
directory is under "My Computer" they should appear and you should be able to
navigate from there to wherever you need to save the files.

The desktop initially appears in expanded form; all of its subdirectories are
shown. Double-clicking on it merely collapses the tree so that only
"desktop" is shown. Unfortunately, double-clicking on it again shows only
the desktop and the associated subdirectories on it at the time; no other
system drives or directories are seen/available.
