One-way computer on my XP HE LAN

I have a wired LAN in my house with 4 computers on it. Three have XP HE and
one has 98 SE. Three are desktops (including the 98 SE) and one is a laptop.
The laptop is the problem child. I can access all computers from the laptop,
but none of the other computers can access the laptop. I can ping the laptop
successfully from all the others and vice versa. It shows up on the
workgroup, but if you try to access it from a XP computer it gives this error
message:

"\\MOM is not accessible. You might not have premission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the
requested logon type at this computer."

If you try to access it from the 98SE computer it gives this messagebox:

"Enter Network Password. You must supply a password to make the connection.
Resource: \\MOM\IPC$" expecting a password. If I enter all user passwords
available on the LAN it wont go.

I have NetBIOS on TC/IP enabled on all computers. I have removed the NODE
entry in the registry so now it matches the other XP computer's display using
IPCONFIG /ALL. I am at a loss...this problem has always been here since I got
the laptop. It's a Compaq which came with XP on it from the factory. The
other computers I upgraded to XP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

And all 4 computers are in the same workgroup. With no firewalls installed
and the windows XP SP2 firewall is turned off also...

Have you tried changing the network cable or port that it's plugged into in
the router/switch/hub?

Have you tried pinging the IP address as well as pinging the computer name
to see if either one will ping?

Yes, I've switched the cables around, but the problem persists on the Laptop.
I can ping the laptop successfully from all others and the laptop can ping
the others and itself. It is connected, but nothing can access the laptop,
only itself..The laptop can freely access all others...

Hmm... that is a puzzle. I would delete all networking components on the
troublesome PC, reboot and reinstall and reconfigure them and reboot and see
what happens.

Did the laptop EVER have a firewall installed in the past?

Well everybody, I fixed it by reformatting and reinstalling everything from
scratch. I think the problem lied in the fact that I tried to change the
name of the main user account along time ago...that's all I can figure out.
It does work now....thanks.
