One computer missing from My Network Places and Workgroup Computer

Well,
I have a home network configured and running but I do have a problem. My
home network consists of five computers, 2x hardwired desktops (1x Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition and 1x Windows XP Home), 2x wireless laptops (both
Windows XP Home), and 1x wireless desktop (1x Windows XP Professional). I
have disabled the browsing service on all the computers but one (the
hardwired desktop running Windows XP Professional x64 Edition) to avoid
browser conflicts. The problem quite simple, the computer that is actually
serving as the Master browser (aka my Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
box) is not being displayed in “My Network Places†or “Workgroup Computersâ€
on any of the computers, not even itself. All the rest of the computers can
see and access each others shared resources via the above mentioned places
(aka “My Network Places†and “Workgroup Computersâ€) but the computer that is
acting as the Master Browser (aka the Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
box) is not seen on any of the computers, not even on itself. However the
network resources are still accessible by manually typing in the computer
name into the address bar (aka \\tiiu-amd-3200\). This however is a pain in
the butt to do and it is really starting to piss me off. Why would this
computer not be displayed in “My Network Places†and “Workgroup Computersâ€,
and why would it not see itself from those places? I know it is not a browser
conflict (because it is the only computer running the browser service). What
would cause this type of behavior? If there a configuration step I have
missed?

Thanks,
Slice

Slice,

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall. There are other possibilities too. Read this
article with an open mind.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the problem
computer, and two of the other computers, so we can diagnose the problem. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Which computer is that from? Both browstat and ipconfig are most useful when
you have multiple computers to compare, preferably the problem computer(s), and
one or two otherwise working computers. As I said above,
....provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the problem computer, and
two of the other computers, so we can diagnose the problem.

In addition to my previous comments, here's a good candidate for problem cause:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : ventca.adelphia.net
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

The nVidia nForce network card contains an embedded hardware firewall!

The browstat and ipconfig in my last post were from my Windows XP

contained in this post are from one of the other computers (aka the win xp

Hope this helps....i will post more if you want

as a note to your post over the firewall in the chipset itself, i chose not
to install the drivers to enable it so i am pretty sure that is not the
issue, however if you could tell me how to double check i would be more then
happy to try.

Also note:
I ran some net view tests from all the computers on the network and all
returned the following results.

C:\>net view
Server Name Remark

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
\\MOMS-DELL The Old DELL
\\RIINA-LAPTOP Riina's Compaq R4000 laptop (Athlon 64 3200+)
\\SIDNEY-AMD2500 Sid's AMD BARTON 2500+ 1GB DDR400
The command completed successfully.

C:\>net view \\tiiu-amd-3200
Shared resources at \\tiiu-amd-3200

Mom's Athlon 64 3200+ w/ 1GB OCZ memory and 250GB Hdd

Share name Type Used as Comment

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Samsung ML-2010 Print Samsung ML-2010 Series
SharedDocs Disk
The command completed successfully.

Also note that I can also net view tiiu-amd-3200 using the IP loopback
address (aka 127.0.0.1) from itself, as well as using its real IP address
from the other computers.

Fixed!

I finally figured out what the problem was. I was digging around and found a
vague reference to the fact that long computer descriptions can cause
problems, and low and behold I shortened the description and, BAM, every
thing is working perfectly! Have you ever heard of such an issue with long
computer descriptions chuck? Why on earth would Microsoft not limit the
description length if they know it causes problems when it is to long?
Anyways, this has been a learning experience and I certainly appreciate your
help chuck.

Slice

P.S. Chuck if you didn’t know about this potential issue before I would
definitely make heavy references to the fact that lengthy computer
descriptions can cause these types of problems.

There are a couple known identity element problems covered in my lengthy
troubleshooting guide

Can you cite the vague reference? Maybe a Microsoft article?

Unfortunately no, I was just surfing the new and I saw someone eluded in a
community forum to the fact that length of the computer description as a
possible cause for the type of problem I was having, so I figured I had
nothing else to loose, so I tried shortening the computer description and it
worked instantly!
