"one-click shut-down" on XP

On Windows98SE, there was a switch to user.exe that
shut down windows. Does anyone know how to do the
same thing on XP, as I'd like to get back a "one-click
shut-down" back on my desktop.

I'm not sure about that, but I know that XP has an executable called
"Shutdown.exe" that you could use, but you'd have to double click the
shortcut unless it's in the quick launch bar.

That's pretty nifty. Thanks for the link. What would the parameters be if I
wanted to create a "Restart" button, I wonder?

In a command prompt box, run command: shutdown -? to see all the
options. Also available if you search for "shutdown" in Help on your
computer.

Another way...

Got a keyboard with a sleep button on it?

You can go into power options and actually program that key to
shutdown instead of sleep if you want to. I did this on my system
simply cause I never use the sleep mode. This way all I have to do is
hit that button to shutdown.

Note...If the button exists, but you dont see the option for it in
Power options, it means you have never actually used the button in
most cases. Press the button once to go to sleep mode and then it
will show in power options with options to change it to
Do Nothing
Ask me what to do
Standby
Shutdown

another options is in control panel\power options\advanced

should be a section for 'Power buttons' and what to do.

On my Compaq Deskpro if i hit the power button it will shut down XP.

Now if u have a keyboard with sleep on it it will say 'sleep buttons'
instead of 'power buttons'.

Course your computer would have to have an atx power button not an at
button which would just shut the whole thing down.

Yay! The freeware utility by Andrej Budja on the aforementioned URL
worked perfectly. Good to have this old friend (shutdown shortcut)

Sorry Bill but nope it won't. It only works with keyboards that have
sleep/standby buttons on them.
