Can someone explain to me why One Care 2.0 doesn't work on 64 bit Vista? 64
bit is the future, and this is Microsoft's own product! What is wrong with
this picture?

I don't understand what you mean? The last beta of OneCare 2.0 I tried works
on Windows Vista x64 although it hung up my system. I personally believe its
not quite there yet, but to say it does not work on the OS is not true.
64-bit is the future, but remember the 32 bit architecture has been around
for the past 20 years, transitions take time. Rumor is future Windows client
will even be available in 32-bit flavors. Microsoft started pushing 64 Bit
Windows in the mainstream in 2005, the second consumer oriented Windows 64
bit just came out in January, the industry is still trying to get and
running with its 32 bit counter part.

The beta worked, but when I installed the final release, it said that 64 bit
was an unsupported operating system. That just makes no sense to me.

64 bit operating systems aren't all that new anymore. Microsoft needs to
push the public more towards 64 bit systems, otherwise everyone will remain
stuck on yesterdays technology. People resist change so they need to be
nudged.

The latest beta does work in X64. Stay on top of developments.

I'm more on top of it than you are. The beta works on x64. The final version
doesn't.

Based on Andre's suggestion, I downloaded the installer again and tried to
run it. It got farther this time. It stopped and said that there was another
instance of the Windows installer running and couldn't go on. ERROR CODE
0044-8007062. I restarted and tried it again. Same deal. I am not installing
anything else. What is the deal with this thing? How can I get it installed?

OneCare 2.0 *does* work on Vista x64.

It was released on Friday. Prior to 11/16, the installer was for 1.6, which was
not able to be installed on Vista x64.

Unfortunately, I don't know what 0044 means. That must be a new error code
related to 2.0 and perhaps specific to Vista x64.

Disregard my previous posts. I kept trying and eventually it installed. It
took 5 tries, but it is installed and working. Weird. I guess the lesson is
that perserverance is a good thing.

My problems earlier this week might have been related to the 1.6 installer.

Various errors such as you experienced are often an indication of a
hardware problem such as defective media, bad memory or hard drive
etc.

Also spyware, viruses and other malware can cause that.

Its a brand new laptop (ThinkPad R61) and it otherwise works fine. No signs
of any hardware problems. I will watch for anything unusual. If it was
malware related, I guess its a good thing I got One Care up and running.

Age is irrelevant.
Hardware can fail anywhere in the lifecycle and some programs are more
susceptible to problems than others.
As a minimum perform diagnostics on the hard drive and memory.

I stand by what I said.
There is a lower probability of failure, but there is still a chance.
Perhaps you would prefer "Age is irrelevant with regards to a specific
component."

Probabilities are irrelevant when you have one of the few that fails.
An excerpt from your link:
"...does not depict the failure rate of a single item, but describes
the relative failure rate of an entire population of products over
time."

The point is failure can happen at any point from new to ancient.
Probabilities are valid for a large group and almost meaningless on an
individual basis such as this.
DOA parts are a good example of instant failures.

Since this is an individual, I will not assume the hardware is good
simply because it is new.
At this point with a problem present, age is irrelevant and
troubleshooting should proceed accordingly.
