On the verge of tearing my hair out......

I've bought a new laptop for the wife for Christmas, which I am trying to set
up to share folders and printers on our desktop "main" machine. They are both
running XP, the desktop is connecting to the 4 port hub / wireless router by
way of Ethernet cable, and the desktop is WI_FI. Both machines have internet
access working OK.

I have run the network setup wizard on both machines and added them to the
same workgroup (MSHOME). I have given them unique names (Max and Paddy). I
have even resorted briefly to turning off the personal firewalls and internet
security.

When I try to Map a network drive under My Computer I can open up the MSHOME
workgroup under Microsoft Windows Network, and then I see both Max and Paddy
happily sitting there with + signs next to them. Bingo I think, I'm there.

But when I try and explore or open the other machine (from whichever machine
I'm on), it just tells me that "\\Max is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions. Login Failure: the user
has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer"

I'm going mad, I cannot seem to work this out - PLEASE help me before Xmas
day !

the other crazy thing is that the laptop Paddy, can ping Max, but not vice
versa, this also applies to host names, I can do a ping max command, but not
a ping paddy command !

Please, if someone can help I would be eternally grateful !
 
Are you running Windows XP Home or Pro?

If Home, you need to make sure that you have the guest account active on
both machines.

If pro, then the problem is with the permissions for the users. You need to
make sure that you have the same username on both machines with the same
password.
You can also look on the knowledge base system and search for shared files
and there is information on how to open a share to more than one person.

Thankyou so much for the reply. I'm the sort of person that will struggle to
sleep until this gets resolved !

The laptop is running XP Home and the desktop XP Pro. What is the impact of
this on the situation please ?

When you say username and password what are you referring to please ?

Chris,

The message "Login Failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon
type at this computer" is seen frequently here. The solution depends upon
whether you are running XP Home or Pro. This article should explain the
solution:
