Ole Object field or Hyperlink - Best solution?

I am working on a document retention db. I originally set up an ole object
field to embed docs in the db. I now realize since users are attaching adobe
acrobat files that this was pretty silly of me, since my db size doubled in
three days - (even w/ compacting) Help! What is the best solution to keep
my db size down? Ole object field that links to file outside db or hyperlink
field?
I will also need to get all of the docs already embedded in db out and onto
server in folder and relink through your answer to the above. Any quick
solution for this?

Deirdre,
I would not use an Ole object field, I currently use a database that links
to files in 2 ways.
Some of the documents have their url stored in a hyperlink field. Clicking
on the document name opens internet explorer to the correct document.
Other documents have their name stored in a field, the path to the document
is stored in a different field.
When I select the document I wish to view, I just click a button and it
opens the document in whatever application the document was written in.
There is a sample database that will help you with some of the code to do
this. It is called DocMgr and can be downloaded from Access MVP, Arvin
Meyer's website at http://www.datastrat.com/DataStrat2.html
