Old XP Drive Won' tmount in Vista

Took an ATA drive from another PC. Drive has with XP on it.
Cabling and installation are configed correctly.
It is recognized in BIOS, Device Mgr and
System information but it won't mount. Can't see it or access it
in, My Computer.

Any thoughts. Really need the data from that drive.

Hi,

Can you see it in disk manager (diskmgmt.msc). Try importing foreign disks
from that tool.

Yes but it has no volume name and no File System Info. Also telling me it's
100% free. Need to rebuild partition info?

This drive was (is) a WinXP SP2 Boot Disk. It has a "Healthy, Active,
Primary Partition.

What to do to get it to mount.

Hi,

In disk manager, click action/rescan disks. Does it mark it now as a foreign
disk? If so, right click it and use the import function.

Unfortunately, tried it all in Disk Mgr..

Could it be the HD cable. Took it from the old machine
(ATA not PATA??) Also, changed the ATA cable position to slave.
No cigar. Then, returned the ATA position to the end connection (Master) and
put the jumper back on to Master. It all comes-up the same. Not recognizing
any file structure on the drive although the Hewlwet PAckard Disk Utility did
recognize that it had a MAster Boot Record.

Tried to use MAxblat, he MAxtor drive util but it won't work w/ Go Back and
all the other junk on the machine. I'll call MAxtor on Monday if not fixed.

What else to do? Already took the step of Drive Recovery. Saved the info and
waiting to buy the program if needed. Do you know of a good
freeware/shareware program that offers good drive recovery? Haven't given-up
yet though. If necessary, would an external, USB casing do the trick?

Thanks. Grasping at straws. Any ideas left?

Hi,

Make sure to use an 80 wire cable, not a 40. Check detection settings in the
system BIOS as well.

My guess is that the drive was originally set up using some overlay
software, and this may be the issue. There are tools like mbrwork from
terabyteunlimited that can help you with recovering the volume.
