I'm tring to install a new hard drive with 250 gigs. every thing goe's fine
except my old windows xp will only reconize 131 or so gigs. my bio's says 250
gigs. I install a newer windows and all went fine. but this was my wifes
windows xp home. I've been told that my windows xp pro doesn't have sp1,
because its so old. any way i'm looking for an answer to this problem.

Why don't you go to Windows Update (in Internet Explorer, Tools -> Windows
Update) and let it update your system to SP2 before you try installing the
new drive ??

Max disk space WinXP will recognise is 130Mb. Some extra steps are
required ... looking for them now.

Depends on your HDD brand - most brand web sites have an XP fix.

For XP to use more than 137 GB, two things are needed. The BIOS must
support 48 bit LBA. If yours does not check with the computer vendor or
the motherboard maker for a BIOS update, but depending on how old the
system is, it should support 48bit LBA. The second requirement is SP1
or better. Create an installation CD slipstreamed with SP2, and use
that for the install.

Personally, I'm a cheapskate. Even so, I found that buying the latest XP
w/sp2 was worth the cost.
