Old software installation problem

Recently I have attempted to install a number of old games on Windows XP Home
edition, and I have had the same problem with all of them.

When I click "install" on any of these programs I receive the error message
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT . The system file us not suitable for
running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose ‘close’ to
terminate the application" and I am presented with the options either to
"close" or "ignore", both of which merely close the box and end with no
result.

I only encountered this issue fairly recently - in the last 3 months or so -
so it may be the case that it has resulted from a Windows XP update pack.

Does anyone have any idea as to how to solve this and use this software
again? Right now I'm unable to use anything over about 4 or 5 years old.

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based
program
