Hi all

I have an old DOS database program that has hundreds of entries in for
names, addresses and phone numbers etc.
It runs fine in Win9X and XP, but in 2000 pro it seems to get to a point
then hang and stop responding.
Can anyone advise possibilities as to why?
Installation usually works bu simply copying the program files into a
directory and running the Exe file. Up to now alls been well in other Os's.
I could really do with the info in this program at the moment.

TIA

Have you enabled/used compatibility mode?

Just realised you're UKRM Robbo ..... ;o)

Yep............why?

Also it didn't make any difference.
Any other ideas?
It *might* be a dodgy file, but as yet all the databases won't open. It's an
old DOS program named FileExpress 5.1. sort of freeform old style database.
I have loads of info in it that I really need.
If you need a copy to play with I could email one over, it's not a huge
proggy.

Have you tried calling the program directly from a COMMAND prompt and /
or a CMD prompt?

Does it require any path statements etc to be set up?

You can try to trick the older software by using Win2000's Application
Compatibility Tool (Apcompat.exe).

This tool is in the SUPPORT folder, the TOOLS subfolder, and the SUPPORT
subfolder on the Win2000 installation CD-ROM. (Yes, there are two
SUPPORT folders.)

Copy the Apcompat.exe file to your hard drive.

Start the Application Compatibility Tool from wherever you saved it to
your hard drive.

Then click Browse and search for the program file of the software you
want to run under Win2000.

Specify the operating system under which the software will run.

If the software still won't run, you may need to enable some additional
aspects of the Application Compatibility Tool.

Older programs may need you to place check marks in some or all of the
checkboxes for the additional settings in the lower half of the
Application Compatibility Tool window.

You'll have to experiment with the settings; different settings will
work with different individual software programs.

If after that it still will not work then chance are its totally borked
as far as 2000 is concerned.
