Still need to use an old DOS program that needs to access
the LPT1 port when it is loaded/exe'd . I understand
these old programs liked to print directly to the lptx
ports, however Win XP Pro does not normally permit this.
Any suggestions ?

Right click on your printer icon and select Properties.
Select the Pool tab and in that windown select "Enable
Printer Pooling" and then LPT1 from the Ports list (in
addition to the port already selected for your printer
(probably USB). Click Apply and OK.
This worked for me in my DOS programs, but I am currently
experiencing some problems in my HP software that causes
an error in HP OfficeJet Com Event Manager which I turn
pooling on. I am working with HP on this.

I have been trying to accomplish a link between a
networked printer and an lpt port. Suggest you try the
command prompt.
