OL'03 - reply or forward no longer marks as read

Something happened to an installation of Outlook 2003 (XP Pro machine)
earlier this week: all of the cached emails in autocomplete vanished and,
more importantly, when a message is replied to or forwarded it is no longer
automatically being marked as read.

Recovering the auto-complete email addresses would be icing on the cake, but
just getting messages to be marked as read when they are replied to or
forwarded again is critical.

Any help will be appreciated.

Sounds like someone created a new mail profile. What type of account are
you using?
Recovering the auto-complete email addresses would be icing on the cake,

Look in %AppData%\Microsoft\Outlook for files whose extension if ".NK2". Do
you see any?

POP3. No new profiles have been created - I'm the only one in the office
who knows what a mail profie is.

Just because someone doesn't know what a mail profile is doesn't mean they
didn't create a new one inadvertently. Help>Detect and Repair has been
known to create a new one under some conditions.

Did you look fore the NK2 file like I suggested?
